Dividend Yield vs. Total Return
Dividend yield measures cash distributions relative to price. Total return includes both income and price changes.
Why the distinction matters
A high yield does not automatically mean a better investment. A falling share price can make yield look high while total return remains weak.
Comparison
| Measure | Captures | Misses |
|---|---|---|
| Dividend yield | Current income relative to price | Price gains or losses |
| Total return | Income plus price movement | Future uncertainty and taxes |
