Weekly Cash-Flow Planning for Families

A household can look balanced for the month and still run short in week two. Weekly planning connects income timing with actual due dates.

Start with dates, not categories

Write each expected deposit and bill on a calendar. Include groceries, fuel, medication, school costs, and other expenses that do not arrive as formal bills.

Calculate a running balance

Begin with available cash, add each deposit, and subtract each expense in date order. A negative point reveals a timing gap even when total monthly income exceeds total monthly spending.

Build mini-buffers

Reserve a small amount each week for price changes and forgotten expenses. Keep larger irregular bills in sinking funds so they do not overwhelm one paycheck.

Use a 15-minute weekly review

  1. Confirm the next deposit.
  2. Review bills due before the following deposit.
  3. Adjust food, fuel, and flexible spending.
  4. Check automatic payments.
  5. Move any planned savings after essentials are protected.
